At the very head of the valley are the famous Honister Slate Mines where vast quantities of roofing slates and building materials have been quarried for generations. Recently, mining operations have recommenced and the owners have a visitor centre and shop. There are regular trips into the mines to see the old workings.

At the top of the Whinlatter pass is is the Whinlatter Forest Park Visitor Centre where information relating to the many activities from this centre are available. A great and informative day out.

The Georgian market town of Cockermouth with Wordsworth House, birthplace of the famous poet is charming, and around the town are many cafes and antique shops.  Mitchells Auction Company have weekly sales of livestock which are very interesting to watch. There are also regular fine antique and art sales attracting many visitors from around the country.

For some excellent shopping and art galleries, Keswick and Cockermouth can offer an awful lot.

The Jennings Brothers Brewery is based in town which offers regular brewery tours (including sampling!)

For swimming, the modern leisure pool at Keswick is a treat and the Leisure Links Sports centre in Cockermouth has a swimming pool and a sports gymnasium with a climbing wall.

Finally the recently opened and widely acclaimed Theatre by the Lake is proving very popular in Keswick.
